The Grotto of the Apparitions:
the heart of the Sanctuaries
Lourdes.
The rock in which the cave is dug is called Massabielle, meaning "old school." In this mass of 27 meters high, the cave measuring 3.80 meters high, 9.50 meters deep and 9.85 meters wide.
It consists of three unequal openings: the largest has become a place of celebration of the Mass. Above, a little to the right, is a pointed niche two meters high. This is the place where the Virgin Mary appeared to Bernadette between February 11 and July 16, 1858. The statue, 1.88 meters tall, is the Apparition in the attitude it took when said: "I am the Immaculate Conception". It was installed in this niche April 4, 1864. Don Lyons two, it was made by Joseph Fabisch, professor at the School of Fine Arts in Lyon.
On the ground, left opposite the Grotto, the exact spot where Bernadette was materialized by a plate: "Here Bernadette prayed February 11, 1858". At the bottom of the cave to the left of the altar, one can see spring source that Bernadette began the day on indications of the Virgin 25 February 1858. This water is now piped to fountains, pools and the water path. Behind the altar is an urn where people can deposit their prayer intentions. Before the altar, a plaque commemorating the visit of Pope August 15, 1983.
At the time of the apparitions
Thursday, February 11, 1858, Bernadette Soubirous hears a noise like a gust of wind and saw a light. She sees a young girl, dressed in white, with a blue sash, a yellow rose on each foot, a rosary in his arm. The Virgin appears 18 times to Bernadette. At a time of the apparitions, there were up to 10,000 people gathered at the Grotto. Today the cave is one of the busiest places in the world with about 6 million pilgrims and visitors each year. Between 1858 and 1900, was pushed back twice in the bed of the Gave over a length of 350 meters and a width of about 28 meters. The channel (Bernadette had crossed) and Merlasse the stream was diverted upstream. They filled their old bed There is thus at the Grotto sufficient forecourt to accommodate several thousand pilgrims.
Today
To enter the Shrine, pilgrims patiently move along the rock. Once arrived in this holy place, they pray, will gather in front of the source, touch the walls of the cave, in gratitude for Mary, Mother of all men, and to express their trust in God. "The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer. He is my God, the rock where I take refuge, my shield, the weapon of my victory, my stronghold "(Psalm 17).
