    Description

This is a damascus steel horse hoof pick custom made by Craig Steketee of Billings, Missouri, it is stamped Stek like all his knives. This hoofpick has a 3" long fossilized mammoth scale on the front side with the beautiful damascus pattern on the back.  It measures 5-3/8" long x 1-1/16" wide x 3/16" thick with leather loop. Beautiful, freshly made in June 2021.
I've known Craig for 10 years or more, he only lives 80 miles from us. I had originally seen his damascus knives on eBay and liked the look, so one day I called him and asked if we could stop in and see his work. That visit led to more visits, soon he invited us (another friend and I) to actually forge a couple of our own knives in his shop, we both had a lot of years machining and welding experience so Craig knew we had the basic skills. I gained a new respect for knifemakers after that adventure, it took us 4 days to power hammer out the steel into billets, shape them, cut out the knife guards, buff them, heat treat the blades and buff and polish the scales. It was a lot of work but it really paid off.
Craig has been making knives for over 35 years, made more than 5,000 over those years (and two hoof picks). I used to beg him to make a couple using damascus steel. A couple of weeks ago he called and said come on over, let's have lunch, you can finally stop begging, he had a couple done and wanted to see what I thought of them. This is one of just two (I included a photo of the one I am keeping for my collection). I don't know if he will make any more, I hope so. If you need more info check out his website, stekknives. We'll be listing some of his newly made knives for him here on eBay, so check back once in a while, if you're looking for something special he still does custom work. I included a couple of photos of Craig, that's PD Craig's shop cat and me with the laptop, we were updating photos on his website.
